The mission of Virginia’s Community Colleges, to address the state’s unmet higher education and workforce training needs, remains as urgent today as when we began. The innovations highlighted here are just some of the ways we strive to meet the evolving 21st century needs of the students, employers and communities we serve.
What if a college system could drastically shorten the time it takes students to complete developmental courses, giving them a fighting chance to progress to college-level work and graduate? That’s the focus of the Developmental Education Redesign initiative, which has received national attention for its innovative approach.
A new paradigm for preparing for college math has been created, and a redesign of English developmental courses is under way.

This innovative, nationally recognized program helps Virginia’s foster youth earn the postsecondary credentials they need to achieve an independent and successful life. Great Expectations is offered at 17 of Virginia’s Community Colleges.
Creativity, efficiency and passion are only three of the ingredients necessary to meet the 21st century needs of Virginia students and employers. This group is working to position the VCCS to meet tomorrow’s pressing challenges.
