VCCS Honors Veterans

Americans honored the bravery, dedication and sacrifice of our country’s nearly 22 million veterans on Veterans Day last Friday. According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, Virginia is home to more than 781,000 of those veterans, many of whom turn to Virginia’s Community Colleges to help them carve a career path once their military service has concluded.

“During our 50-year history, Virginia’s Community Colleges have proudly served military students, their families, and our country’s veterans by providing access to the resources, education and training they need to succeed at home. We consider it a privilege to enroll those who have served in the armed forces and are dedicated to their success in the pursuit of education — be it higher education, retraining, vocational skills or just lifelong learning,” said Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges.

• In academic year 2015-2016, Virginia’s Community Colleges, collectively, served 38,082 military-connected students, which included active service members, reservists, retired military, veterans, and their spouses and dependents.
• Virginia is ranked 7th nationally in veteran population, a ranking that is expected to rapidly increase in subsequent years. By 2022, Virginia is expected to be ranked 4th in veteran population.
• Virginia also is one of the states with highest population of college-aged veterans (under 25 years old) and has the largest population of veterans under 40, which is the population most likely to be attending college or pursuing additional training.

Letter Campaign Supports Veterans

More than 250 letters are on their way to veterans and active duty service members, thanks to Danville Community College’s first Letters for Veterans campaign.

Danville Community College (DCC) students, faculty, and staff recently participated in the Letters for Veterans campaign as part of Week to Engage, a service week made possible through a partnership between DCC, Averett University and Piedmont Community College. The letters were mailed on Tuesday, October 25.

The campaign originated at DCC, but garnered support from the entire community.

Q: What is the Chancellor’s Planning Retreat? What is its purpose? Who attends and why?

A: Each year, the Chancellor invites college leadership – presidents, vice presidents, faculty, and state board members and others – to come together for conversations related to future strategies for our colleges. The current event represents a mash-up, bringing together what was formerly the planning retreat held in August and the State Board’s Annual Meeting held in November. This day-and-a-half-long gathering featured a variety of keynote addresses and concurrent sessions led by VCCS colleagues and national leaders. This year’s retreat in particular, took a few moments to reflect upon the game-changing work of our first 50 years while also discussing ideas and strategies for addressing the opportunities and challenges of the next 50 years.

Faculty’s Role in Campus Emergency Planning and Response
For most community college students in Virginia, professors are the face of the college. That’s just the reality of a student’s experience – they see their instructors more than anyone else on a campus. As a result, faculty are likely to be the ones that students will depend upon if an emergency situation arises on that campus. Therefore, faculty should play an important role in community college emergency planning and response, but, within the VCCS, that is largely not the case.

Leading from Where They Stand

They arrived at the new System Office not quite sure what to expect. For pre-meeting homework, they had to read leadership articles from Harvard Business Review, review strategic planning documents from the American Association of Community Colleges and the VCCS, and complete self-assessments. As they took their seats, you could a hear a few whispers, “Are you ready for this?” followed by a bit of friendly, but nervous laughter. “We had heard that, since the Office of Professional Development redesigned this course, we needed to arrive rested and ready. The four days were going to be exhausting. Little did I know, they were also going to be life changing!” said Dixie Dalton, dean of humanities, social sciences, and business at Southside Virginia Community College.
