VCCS State Board approves new policy to resolve workplace conflicts involving faculty at Virginia’s Community Colleges. Supporters say the new faculty grievance policy modernizes a litigious and outmoded system that was in place since the 1990’s.

New VCCS State Board Chair brings strong sense of Southwest Virginia place and values to the post. Susan Tinsley Gooden remembers her rural roots in Bassett, Virginia.

FastForward grants build VCCS job training capacity. $2.75 Million investment in new and expanded programs will help open doors for job seekers in every corner of Virginia.

New River Community College student vaults into the national spotlight. Nineteen year old Jody Freeman was widely regarded as an underdog contestant, but he amazed the crowd with his performance on American Ninja Warriors.

VCCS leadership academies attract some of the rising stars from among our college faculty and administrators. Academy participants have been challenged at recent sessions to take on some of the biggest questions confronting community colleges, here in Virginia and across the country.
Now, ten of their concise, peer-reviewed research papers have been edited, gathered and published in INQUIRY, the Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges. Submitted for your summer reading pleasure!

PVCC program that connects job seekers with skills and employers grows, moves, and gets editorial pat on the back. Network2Work, the Piedmont Virginia Community College program that helps train and place job seekers in family-sustaining work opportunities, is boosting its staff and moved this summer to larger quarters in Charlottesville.
The program’s contribution to the community’s well-being has not gone un-noticed; the local daily in Charlottesville offered its congratulations in a recent editorial (https://www.dailyprogress.com/opinion/opinion-editorial-success-spawns-growth/article_4abace91-1425-534a-9040-8ebee14f16d3.html) .

_OTHER HIGHER ED NEWS OF NOTE:   _

 • Free Community College in Virginia in exchange for community service: Governor Northam says details are still being worked out but tells business leaders in Norfolk that his G3 program will include a plan to offer free tuition (https://pilotonline.com/news/local/education/higher-education/article_b733396a-a964-11e9-b912-fbdfc4a19bdb.html) to community college students who work in the public service sector.

• “With the cost of college having reached record highs, many families feel they have no recourse but to take on large loans. But have your child consider community college — not as a last resort but as a more economical first choice.” Michelle Singletary’s “Color of Money” column in the Washington Post spotlighted the substantial advantages (https://beta.washingtonpost.com/business/get-there/community-college-should-be-a-first-choice-not-a-last-resort/2019/07/16/507045a0-a7da-11e9-a3a6-ab670962db05_story.html?outputType=amp) of community college for families with college-bound students.

• Yet another troubling story from the world of student financial aid: some parents are transferring legal guardianship of their high school-aged children to someone else — often, a friend or relative— so that their children can declare themselves as financially independent from them, likely enhancing their eligibility for federal, state and university aid. Read more (https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/30/parents-exploit-legal-loophole-to-get-their-kids-more-college-aid.html) .

• Rural Virginia is expected to continue losing population in coming years, even as the state headcount overall is expected to reach 8.65 million by 2020. Projections (https://news.virginia.edu/content/population-projections-show-virginia-aging-growing-more-slowly) from UVA’s Weldon Cooper Center paint a sobering picture for the countryside.
