GET INVOLVED! Your tweets and posts can help our students #SlashStudentDebt!

The VCCS is marking National Community College Awareness Month in April with a social media campaign based around the hashtag #SlashStudentDebt. All 23 colleges are participating, and we ask that staff and students join our campaign by sharing the content on your own personal social channels. Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during April, new content will be posted to the VCCS blog, Facebook page and Twitter account. Take a look and help us spread the word using #SlashStudentDebt!

Why Celebrate?

Concern over student debt is increasingly the first thing people mention when they talk about higher education today. In Virginia, that concern dictated most, if not all, of the legislation and conversation about higher education at the 2017 General Assembly session. And why not? The average bachelor’s degree graduate in Virginia is leaving his or her institution with close to $30,000 in debt.

Virginia’s Community Colleges are an answer to this challenge. Regardless of what level of education students seek – from industry-recognized credential to a post-doctorate degree – Virginia’s Community Colleges can save students money along the way through myriad opportunities. Did you know, for example, that a student who first completes an associate degree at one of Virginia’s Community Colleges and then transfers to a public university in Virginia would save at least $45,000 on a bachelor’s degree?

The social media campaign posts highlight the financial benefits of a VCCS education, include student success stories, and point readers to more information.

Please share these material through your own social media accounts. After all, wouldn’t it be great for your friends and family to learn about all the opportunities our colleges offer? Please remember to use the #SlashStudentDebt hashtag with all your posts and comments!'
