Culpeper businessman and longtime Germanna Community College supporter Joe Daniel (center) mingles at the poker table at GCC’s Monte Carlo Night fundraiser April 27 in Culpeper.

Organizers already had set an ambitious goal for Germanna Community College’s 25th annual Monte Carlo fundraiser: $500,000.

On April 27, the event smashed through its goal and more than doubled the previous record, raising $700,000 for the Germanna Guarantee Program, which helps students experiencing financial hardships stay in school as part of the Germanna Community College Educational Foundation Scholarship.

GCC president Janet Gullickson called it an “off-the-charts, knock-your-socks-off, record-setting” night that will make a difference in the lives of hundreds of deserving students.
Culpeper home builder and philanthropist Joe Daniel jump-started the fund-raising by offering to match donations at the event.

Daniel and his wife, Dr. Linda Daniel, have invested more than $2 million in Germanna over their quarter of a century association with the College. Daniel credits community colleges for giving students a second chance at success.

“We wanted to help students and we came up with this program called the Germanna Guarantee and Scholarship. Monte Carlo became a way to help students who were struggling financially and were deserving,” said Daniel. “I am so proud to be associated with Germanna; it is truly our community college.”
