On a mid-June morning, Paul D. Camp Community College dedicated its Regional Warehouse and Distribution Training Facility, located in a repurposed newspaper warehouse in Franklin. The event attracted more than one hundred local and regional dignitaries, including PDC local board member Youlander Hilton (above), who tried out the facility’s forklift simulator.

“In this renovated space—designed and outfitted to replicate a real-world warehouse environment—we not only will be able to customize training to meet local employers’ needs, but more importantly, we will be able to help put people to work in meaningful jobs that allow for career advancement and pay a family-sustaining wage,” said PDCCC President Daniel Lufkin (pictured left holding scissors).

The college says the logistics training facility is a collaborative effort of many donors and business partners. PDCCC Workforce Development Director Angela Lawhorne called the project “a labor of love.”

The facility will provide skilled workers for in-demand jobs in addition to helping attract future employers who are looking for a trained workforce.

“This area will continue to grow, and we want to grow smartly with it,” said John Reinhart, CEO and Executive Director of the Virginia Port Authority.
