Workforce WednesdayCeleste Hall is the Career Coach Specialist in Workforce Development Services at the Virginia Community College System.

70 Adult Career Coaches work in community colleges across Virginia with Virginia Workforce Centers (also known as “One-Stops”) and Virginia Employment Commission offices to identify trade- impacted workers and provide career coaching to connect them with training leading to employment.

career coach 2013 graphicThe Virginia Adult Career Coach (VACC) certification was created to provide a common core of skills for our coaches who have a variety of work and educational backgrounds. The program addresses college and career readiness, career development theory, assessment and uses of labor market information with a focus on the needs of adult learners.

The 40-hour certification includes 30 hours of online work and 10 hours of face-to-face training. Coaches who wish to continue can complete additional hours to earn the Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) certification. The GCDF is a globally-recognized credential for professionals who provide career development services in a variety of settings.

These modules helped me to understand and deal with the individuals that we serve and provided strategies that I can use every day. I am sharing what I have learned with others as we work together on various projects for our students.

The depth of knowledge and validation provided through the certification process provides the background and confidence that our career coaches need to make the strongest impact possible in their colleges and communities.

During a recent site visit, it occurred to me that Virginia could boast one of the best-trained cohorts of career coaches in the country, thanks to the Adult Career Coaching Certification Program. For a moment, I felt like my passion for the program had gotten the better of me. However, as I re-think this, I say without apology that our coaches are indeed the best-trained career coaches in the country!
